Collaboration
Collaboration implies a few different things to us. Overall, it is the willingness and ability to work together to improve things. It also comes from a place of assuming honorable intent until proven otherwise. Collaboration needs to be part of the mindset of not just everyone in the company, but the people we do business with too. As soon as the mentality shifts away from assumed good intent then it changes any exchange from a collaborative game to a competitive game, and we can always accomplish more in a collaborative game. This is critical for maximizing the added value of continuous improvement.
Continuous Improvement
Continuous improvement represents a dedication to learning and growing, a commitment to life (a business will die without this, and people often become irritable zombies). Its traditional definition, of a sustained pattern of incremental improvements to the business at all times, is only a narrow application of this principle. That same strategy should be applied to how we treat each other, how businesses interact with their community, how management prioritizes employee health along with company health.
Empathy
This is the continuous improvement term for human interactions. A focus on empathy generates understanding, supports the assumption of good intent, and highlights peoples’ connection. Empathy allows businesses to understand their customers better, it allows easier collaboration and generates loyalty.
Freedom
Freedom has to do with autonomy, innovation, and individualism. Freedom means empowering people (with growth and sincere support for what’s best for them), to make their own decisions whenever possible, and coaching them whenever it isn’t so that they continue to learn. Freedom means flexibility to shift quickly, to not accept the bounds that other people assume are immutable and to make that our advantage. Freedom is not running a business with a class system. Freedom is the recognition of value of each individual’s perspective and contribution.
Integrity
Integrity wraps truth, honor, courage and fairness all into one way of operating. Integrity is the other key portion ensuring interactions continue to come from assumed good intent. It is always searching for the Pareto Optimal solution in a given situation, and it is a willingness to let go of personal benefit to create whole new echelons of enhanced value, whether that is in social capital, traditional capital, innovation, brand trust, collaboration, or efficiency. Integrity is also the keystone to what makes freedom most effective.
